A Wellington teachers response to the Christchurch Earthquake

Students and Teachers alike have been impacted by the Christchurch Earthquake. Around 35% of each of my classes knew directly or indirectly someone in Christchurch. My approach was to acknowledge and encourage discussion on the Earthquake, including;

  • a minutes silence, the students were pleased to do this and very respectful (its hard to get 30 seconds silence at the best of times !)
  • being open about the surreal nature of teaching and learning Excel, when 300km South people were dying or dead, homeless and destitute
  • linking some of what students were learning to skills being deployed to manage the Earthquake e.g. rapid accurate text entry is valuable skills to have when taking calls to help lines… as are good people skills.

Indeed a strange week……….
