I had the pleasure of doing relief for a senior Maori class recently. Quite a small class but lots of good humour. They were studying poi and music and completing “homework”. YouTube was an excellent resource and they were able to access a variety of waiata to review and study.
Interestingly they were engaging in discussion as if there was no teacher present. That’s good that they feel confident and comfortable to do this… however listening to their discussion reminded me just what a different world teenagers live in compared to teachers, and why a good deal of what we attempt to teach can be so irrelevant to them….
Secondly and contrary to my expectations many of the students taking Maori are not Maori… that is also good.
