Open Data in the classrooom

I will be undertaking an inquiry(something teachers do all the time) into the use of open data in the classroom. By open data I have in mind resources such as http://cat.open.org.nz/ and http://www.data.govt.nz/

I am quite keen on promoting the use of open data in the classroom, in particular when teaching;

  1. MySQL databases
  2. Spreadsheets

It could also be used to teach Maths, in the same way as the Statistics Department data sets are used. http://www.stats.govt.nz/tools_and_services/tools/TableBuilder.aspx

Mostly because the data is more relevant, more interesting and real!

Now… If only there were a ‘school corner’ for open data similar to Statistics NZ facility http://www.stats.govt.nz/tools_and_services/services/schools_corner/
