Facebook (and Twitter) at WEGC

Following notification to parents and an update to Cyber Safety policies WEGC has provided access to Facebook to staff and students. Access to other sites such as Twitter was opened up several weeks ago.

I had the opportunity to integrate Facebook into a Unit Standard about Digital Communications. We looked at a range of Facebook (and Twitter) accounts to discuss the purpose of each type of communication. e.g. Lance Armstrong on Twitter essentially saying “I am Innocent” to 3.5 m followers. We looked at John Keys Facebook, the whanau from a Maori student (215 members closed group) and a site dedicated to Samoan pride. All with quite different communication purposes. It was a useful class.

No doubt there will be challenges but I look forward to improving teaching and learning with the use of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking facilities.
