I recently reviewed the results for NCEA Digital technologies external assessments Level 1 (Year 11, Form 5). Seems that 50% of students failed the Information Management(IM) assessment, a disproportionately larger number being boys. That is quite a high rate of failure. As it turns out at WEGC we have well over 90% of students passing the IM assessment…fantastic, but it’s not like information management in practice is particularly hard.
A similar story for Level 2 (Year 12, Form 6).
We need to understand the reasons why so many fail if we are to improve success and retain participation levels (Recall students take options that have a reasonable chance of success ).
- New standards, teachers are still trying to understand expectations of NZQA.
- Teachers to not have sufficient knowledge to teach IM (being a programmer does not help).
- Students/Teachers failing to appreciate the new DT standards are NOT the older unit standards which are much easier.
