What is a schools competitive advantage?

I think a schools competitive advantage lies with the selection and retention of staff. Most important are the Principal and Senior Management Team, who in turn select Heads of Department and Teachers.

You can fix poor processes but not poor staff, hence it is essential that the Principal is involved in the selection of each and every staff member. Anything less increases risk to the school. This of course means that the Board of Trustees must get it right in the selection of the Principal.

It seems to me this exactly the same in Government agencies and Corporate business. The difference being that in business you can manage poor performance out… even if you do this via a restructure. Unlike schools, that are heavily unionized and not likely to be able to initiate restructures based on changing student needs. This later point is quite important but seldom discussed…
