I had the pleasure of listening to Lewis Bostock @LewisBostock at a recent Wellington Schools conference (see above article). He discussed various strategies to engage students using social media. At the time I commented to Lewis that he was courageous. Lewis asked if this was a compliment, indeed it was. Courageous insofar as he was taking the risk of engaging students via social media and in doing so testing the boundaries of what type of social networking engagement enhances learning and is appropriate. At this stage the boundaries are still being drawn, my current thinking is that broadcast social media directed at a group or class is appropriate and 1:1 exchange teachers should use traditional school channels e.g. email, Google Docs comments …. It will be interesting to see how this all evolves. I for one, will be trying some of Lewis’s approaches.
I expect this discussion will be widened to include interaction with parents via social media at some stage.
