Twice in the last week I have had discussions with students (Year 12 and Year 13 respectively) about their choice to leave school now. They both have a plan and I wish them well. Good on them, school is not for everyone and frankly staying till the end of Year 13 is a waste of their time and tax payers money. For those that stay, doing little, yet without any alternatives school is little more than a baby sitting service.
The reason why I am relaxed at students leaving school early in NZ, is that we still have a system where students that can demonstrate motivation and capability are able to enrol in University at age 20. I hope we don’t remove this “second chance” option.
