The Ministry for Women is the government agency responsible for improving outcomes for women in New Zealand. They believe technology will be fundamental for many jobs in the future and at the moment there is high demand and good pay for people qualified in digital technology fields. In 2014 around 26,000 young women graduated with a degree. Of those only 345 graduated with a degree in tech and of those 20 were Maori and 15 were Pacifica – across all of New Zealand.
The Ministry of Women’s goal is to increase the number of women in technology. They came to WEGC to talk about ways that university, polytechnic or digital technology teachers could make tech more appealing to girls in order to increase this number. WEGC was chosen as it is a girls’ school which has been teaching Digital Technologies since its inception in 2011, and has a good number of girls taking the subject successfully.
A number of year 12 and 13 students came during a lunchtime to share their ideas with the Ministry of Women.
