I was privileged to be a judge for the NZ Open Source Awards 2018 and subsequently, present one of the awards at the gala dinner. This gave me the opportunity to mix with a range of business and IT practitioners – not usually the case for a teacher.
I had the opportunity to practice what I was going to say with my Year 11 Computer Science class. What a great opportunity to show my students the diversity of open source projects on offer and how they can impact on, and improve peoples lives. Of particular interest was the communities involved in bringing these systems to life.
The more involvement teachers have with local businesses and communities, the better for their students.
